The current Lindale Settlers

The History

In an effort to try and revive the flagging cricket participation of the younger generation the Lindale Settlers will endeavor to hold 4 additional cricket fixtures per annum in Johannesburg as well as an annual golf day.

The younger generation have taken over and with youth on their side we look forward to their future success.

The whole team, young and old, hope to be able to contribute to those in need going forward – a really worthwhile cause which must be followed through on.

The current Captain is Simon Amm, Secretary and Administration is being handled by Jonathan Ford and Bruce Austin and our golf champions were our first playing lady members – Jean Austin, Georgie Pagden, Lorette Amm and Kate Amm.

We have many new members since out first golf day in November 2015 and welcome all of them. You are never too old to become a Settler – ask Peter Hird, Cuan King and Spencer Hill who all participated after they were 60!

The Settlers, as they are affectionately known, were born our of a request by the Nicky Oppenheimer XL (NFO XL) to play an annual cricket and golf fixture against a team from the Eastern Cape. Peter Amm was a member of the NFO XL at the time and volunteered to arrange the team.

The first match, a traditional declaration game, was held at Randjiesfontein on 14 October 2001. The Settlers scored 277 for 6 declared – (Mark Ford: 81, Philip Amm: 50, Peter Amm: 35, Alan Kourie: 2-25 and Hugh Page: 2 -25) NFOXL 267 all out (Joubert Strydom: 133, Hugh Page: 57) an exciting first game.

The fixture has been held every year since then on an alternating basis and there have been two ties in our Fixtures. The Salem Cricket Club, which is well over one hundred years old, is the home of the Settlers.

The Randjiesfontein Cricket facility, which was developed by the Oppenheimer family is a spectacular cricket venue and every cricketer that has ever played there has cherished the memory. The sportsmanship and hospitality know no bounds and it is a pleasure to reciprocate every second year in Salem and on Lindale.

The Settlers have played against the Stanford XL from Elgin once, when on tour in the Cape and twice against the Knobs XL (KZN Old Boys) in Salem.

The NFO XL has become the JEO XL but the spirit of this annual fixture lives on through sons, cousins and friends who love the game of cricket.

On the 3 November 2018, the Salem Settlers will be taking on the The Oppies at Salem.
